The use of air fryers has become so popular that keeping them clean for more frequent use can only include aluminum foil.
Deep fryers have changed the rules of the game in the kitchen. They make our okra always crunchy, help us pretend that donuts can be healthy, add new lighter meals to our meal plans, make it easier to grow flowering onions at home, and make us sticky cookies in the pan at the push of a button.
Because our deep fryers spin so fast, the good thing is that they are very easy to clean. However, it’s very tempting to put some foil in there to catch the drips and make cleaning easier, but is that acceptable? Short answer: yes, you can put aluminum foil in the fryer.
While we all know not to put foil in the microwave (if you haven’t, the flying sparks will remind you), deep fryers work differently. They use hot air instead of real microwaves to create heat, so putting aluminum foil in the fryer won’t cause the same unsettling spark. In fact, covering the airfryer basket with foil can really help when you’re cooking delicate foods like fish.
However, there is one important caveat: place the foil layer only on the bottom of the fryer basket where the food is placed, and not on the bottom of the fryer itself. Deep fryers work by circulating hot air that comes from the bottom of the fryer. The foil lining will restrict airflow and your food will not cook properly.
If you plan to use aluminum foil in your fryer, place a small amount of foil in the bottom of the basket, being careful not to cover the food. This will make cleaning easier, but still allow hot air to circulate and warm the food. Thus, planning ahead will allow you to use your device more efficiently without the need for frequent deep cleaning.
Of course, it’s always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your specific fryer. For example, Philips doesn’t recommend using foil, and Frigidaire says you can just line a basket instead of the bottom of the fryer we suggested above.
Air fryers are made with a non-stick coating and using any utensil to scrape food off the surface can damage the surface. The same rule applies to abrasive sponges or metal scrubbers. You don’t want to use harsh cleaners and ruin the finish.
Abrasive cleaners are also contraindicated. In fact, many disinfectants are not suitable for cleaning food contact surfaces. Check the sanitizer label first to see if it can be used on kitchen surfaces. You want to take good care of your fryer so that it lasts as long as possible. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply with a sponge.
Generally, deep fryers do not need to be cleaned every time they are used. Recommendations include cleaning after every second use or washing baskets, trays and pans in the dishwasher. Never immerse the main unit in water. As with any kitchen appliance, the answers to any questions about proper cleaning can be found in the manufacturer’s manual that came with the product.
